Assailing Falcons is one of the most distinguished members of SAE International. The team brings together engineers from a variety of backgrounds that are involved in aircraft design and manufacturing, providing them with professional expertise and hands-on knowledge. The team's goal is to allow students to better themselves and hone their skills by embarking on a journey of learning, technical experience, and achievement.
As a team, we aim to grab the highest laurels for the country and construct aerodynamically efficient aircraft. We tend not only to achieve our mission statement of the competition but also to learn and gather deep knowledge about avionics and aeronautics for further field development. We work with utmost passion and focus to manifest airplanes which are capable of more than competitions.
One of the most important parts of building an aircraft is ‘design’. To design an aircraft that is admired by the likes of engineers at Lockheed Martin and Boeing, we give design research paramount importance. Multiple factors such as control surface sizing, drag reduction, crosswind handling capability, airfoil, and fuselage design analysis are taken into consideration. We design aircraft best suited for peak performance in a particular location. After extensive research, the design team iterates and finalizes factors such as the dimension of wings based on the lift requirements, tail dimension as per stability requirements, and control surface design as per roll rate and estimated crosswind.
The avionics department designs and implements electronic systems at par with the rest of the aircraft to control and communicate with the craft. We use commercially available flight controllers as well as microcontrollers to develop and test our logics while playing with a host of sensors and actuators. Our aim is also to go beyond the requirements of the mission statements of the competitions we participate in, venture deeper into the fields of UAVs and autonomous flight systems, using custom-built algorithms, efficient electronics and different computer vision and image processing techniques.
A propulsion system is vital to an aircraft. It gives life to the aircraft's body. Our aircraft propulsion system consists of either an electric motor or an IC engine to generate the required power which drives a propeller to generate the required thrust. A lightweight aircraft with high lift capacity is ineffective without an adequately powerful propulsion system. At Assailing Falcons, we experiment using a wide range of propellers in order to select the optimum propeller for our competition mission requirements. This propeller analysis, coupled with our highly efficient aircraft, has given us many international accolades.
Management involves the tactical aspect of the day-to-day functioning of the team. They are responsible for regulating the working environment to ensure a rapid pace for the team. Each day, they face countless responsibilities, including managing events and people. The management team oversees the smooth functioning of every department in the team. In addition, management is responsible for sponsorships and documentation. Having a face gives the team credibility as well as financial support. They also handle the social media platforms of the team. This helps the team in making an impactful presence worldwide.
Computational Fluid Dynamics is performed using ANSYS Fluent and Star CCM+ to validate the results provided by the design department. This gives an accurate estimation of Lift, Drag & Pressure Distribution associated with the aircraft. This result can help us pinpoint the source of maximum drag or minimum lift which allows us to modify the overall aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft. This aircraft simulation shows the airflow distribution around an aircraft design at a low subsonic incompressible flow regime.
This department prepares the aircraft on 3D modeling software like SolidWorks while utilizing the design parameters, to visualize the actual aircraft, bringing our designs closer to reality. Structural analysis is done using software like ANSYS Static Structural module. The most prominent role of this department is to incorporate a strong yet light structure by making use of extensive, in-house fabricated composites. Further, the structures department designs an efficient and reliable payload dropping mechanism, to carry and drop the maximum payload. This department also designs the landing gear system for the aircraft.

My time in Assailing Falcons was immense. It had the right atmosphere of learning and working together which you won't find anywhere else. Assailing Falcons is a meaningful experience that gives beyond what it promises. I was lucky enough to hold on to it, to see the wonders it does to everyone who was part of it. Team Assailing Falcons gave me a chance to apply my textbook learnings to real-world challenges through participation in SAE Aero Design East 2020 held in Florida, United States. Aside from technical capabilities , the Team instilled in me the ability to think clearly, organize information, problem-solving skills, devotion, and leadership qualities
